The precise effect of oral antioxidants or supplements of Echinacea or vitamin C within the context of sports is still unknown at present. The available research results are indeed rather contradictory. It is, however, certain that the progression of each sportsman, either in the context of fitness and health, or in the context of competition and performance, depends on the state of health of the individual. Every interruption of the training process because of illness has a negative impact on the physical fitness and/or physical performance capacity.

Biochemical properties:
SportsControl EchinOX is a combined formula of a high-quality extract of the Echinacea Purpurea plant (also called 'Sun hat') and various antioxidants in the form of plant extracts with curcumin and resveratrol on the one hand, and vitamin C and selenium on the other hand.

Echinacea Purpurea is a perennial plant native to North-America and a member of the Asteraceae family. The aboveground parts of the plant, and to a lesser extent the root, are used to prepare extracts to which medicinal properties are attributed. 100 mg of the high-quality Echinacea extract used in this formula provides about 4 mg of polyphenols. Curcumin is a yellow pigment obtained from the rhizome of the Curcuma Longa plant, a member of the ginger or Zingiberaceae family. The powder obtained by grinding the dried rhizomes is called curcuma. It gives curry powder its yellow colour for example. Curcuma contains high concentrations of various polyphenols which are commonly referred to as curcuminoids. Indian natural medicine attributes several medicinal properties to curcuminoids, among which antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is added to SportsControl EchinOX in the form of an extract with a high bioavailability in order to assure ideal absorption of curcumin. Moreover, the addition of piperine, in the form of an extract of Piper Nigrum (~black pepper) increases the absorption of BioCurcumine. Another important ingredient of SportsControl EchinOX is a high-quality extract of the Vitis Vinifera fruits (~vine). Grape extract contains significant concentrations of resveratrol, a polyphenol. Vitis Vinifera extract provides resveratrol in the form of trans-resveratrol that is rapidly and efficiently absorbed. By analogy with curcumin, resveratrol possesses antioxidant properties. In addition, SportsControl EchinOX contains ascorbic acid, i.e. vitamin C at the rate of 90 mg per tablet, corresponding to 150% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA). The antioxidant spectrum of SportsControl EchinOX is completed by the addition of selenium. Selenium is a mineral, just like magnesium, iron, potassium, or sodium. It is also an important component of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that plays an important role in the endogenous antioxidant action. One SportsControl EchinOX tablet contains 50µg of elemental selenium. This corresponds to approximately 91% of the RDA.

Physiological functions:
Regular easy to moderate physical exercises normally enhance the functioning of the immune system. However, intensive physical training is often associated with a suppression of the immune system. This explains why people who exercise constantly and intensively, are often more susceptible to all kinds of minor infections than those who exercise moderately in a recreational context. Although literature is not consistent, scientific research has shown that oral supplementation of Echinacea Purpurea, on the one hand, and vitamin C, on the other hand, can support immunity, and thus reduce the incidence and/or duration of viral upper respiratory tract infections. The immunostimulating action of vitamin C is ascribed to its antioxidant action. The precise action mechanism of Echinacea Purpurea is still unknown up to now. The production of so-called free oxygen radicals in the muscles increases during physical exercises. Free oxygen radicals or 'reactive oxygen species' (ROS) are by-products of oxygen metabolism in mitochondria, and are responsible for so-called 'oxidative stress'. Free oxygen radicals are highly toxic to numerous cellular structures and processes, and can among other things damage cell membranes and mitochondria due to 'peroxidation' of fats. Muscle cells obviously possess their own endogenous antioxidant system, so as to efficiently protect the cells from oxidative stress and possible damage during intensive exercises. However, there is also evidence that the antioxidant capacity of the body depends on a sufficient intake of antioxidants through food. Consequently, oral supplementation of antioxidants in the form of SportsControl EchinOX can possibly contribute to a better protection against oxidative stress.
